The whistle is a crucial piece of emergency gear. There will not be a moment on the trip when the whistle is not around your neck. If a member of the crew should find themselves in imminent danger, the whistle would be used to summon the leaders. It should be loud, obnoxious and dependable. Just the sort of thing a coach might wear.
