SETI
It has been over fifty years since human beings have been seriously at work searching for signs of other intelligent life in the universe. We wonder what they may look like. Perhaps something like the four-armed Ixchel? Or something totally alien? Most people assume that the aliens will look like a Gray. What about alien biology. Is it the same as ours? Is it based on water? The man most responsible for the development of SETI is astronomer Frank Drake, author of the now famous Drake Equation.
The Arecibo Message.
To the left, you see an illustration of the signal sent by the Arecibo radio telescope. It was the first attempt to send a message intended to be received by another intelligent race. It consists of a lot of 1's and 0's. But what is the proper way to arrange these characters? Can you interpret its meaning?
What if we actually did receive a message from another civilization?
The SETI Message Project
You are to create a message, which hopefully, will be decoded by another member of your class.
A short paper on your SETI project is due to be handed in by the starting time of you scheduled final exam.
