Earth's Sister Planet

    Venus in this month's sky

Venus has been unobservable as of late. As August begins, our nearest planetary neighbor is only a few degrees away from the Sun in our sky. On the 16th of this month, Venus will reach superior conjunction with the Sun, setting up an evening apparition later this year.
Venus alternates between evening and morning apparitions, never straying too far from the Sun in our sky. This link also will calculate the various alignments of the planet as both it and Earth orbit the Sun. Is it really possible to see Venus without a telescope? Of course! In fact, the Morning Star becomes so bright at times that some observers might mistake it for something artificial.
