Mercury in this month's sky
September begins with Mercury passing the Sun in inferior conjunction. The planet will be about 18 ° away from the rising Sun in greatest western elongation on the 19th of September. This will be a fairly poor apparition for Mercury.
Generally, Mercury is a decidedly difficult object to locate due to its proximity to the Sun. I have only been able to spot Mercury maybe five or six times in almost forty years of observing. Here, John Walker gives us a page that will calculate the upcoming alignments of Mercury.
