Greatest Western Elongation

This planetary alignment is generally used to describe the observed positions of Mercury and Venus. At greatest western elongation, the planet is seen to be as far to the right of the Sun as it can possibly get. That is about 27 degrees for Mercury and about 47 degrees for Venus.
Greatest western elongations therefore make for an early morning object.
