September 23, 2011

This is the date of the autumnal equinox. The Sun crosses that imaginary circle around the sky called the celestial equator today at 9:05 U.T., marking the begining of autumn for northern hemisphere observers. So can you balance an egg on its end today?

The day itself is also refered to as the autumnal equinox. Those of us who watch the sky, particularly sunrises and sunsets, are well aware of the Sun's movement north and south throughout the year. Autumn begins around September 22 every year, but the exact date will change because of our manipulations with the calendar.
Tonight marks the 165rd anniversary of the discovery of the planet Neptune. Did the British or the French discover this planet?
