Can you find the North Star? Start by looking for the Big Dipper, which is standing on its end in the northeast after sunset. Take two two stars at the end of the bowl and continue to the left until you come to Polaris, the North Star. Polaris is not that bright, only 2.1 magnitude. It should be about forty-two degrees above the northern horizon for Cranbrook observers.
