Today is the day of the earliest sunset for northern hemisphere observers. Those of us in southeast Michigan will see the sun set at 5:00 pm E.S.T. The shortest number of daylight hours does occur on December 21, but sunrise and sunset change at different rates because of the unique nature of Earth's orbit and tilt.
